Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO)

General Responsibilities:

Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) is one of the vital positions at the Round Valley Indian Tribes. THPO advises Federal agencies on the management of Tribal historic properties and strives to preserve their Tribe’s cultural heritage and preservation programs.

Qualifications Include:

• Good communication skills; both verbal and written.
• A willingness to travel to any project’s sites within traditional tribal territory.
• The ability to represent the Round Valley Indian Tribes in a professional and competent manner.
• The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with various Tribal Staff and the professional volunteers listed in the THPO grant proposal, as well as outside agency personnel and the general public.
• Must be able to work outside for long periods of time in various weather conditions and travel to remote sites.
• Must demonstrate knowledge of local historic and prehistoric village sites, culture, religion, ceremony and burial practices of the Round Valley Indian Tribes.
• Possesses experience related to historic preservation and cultural resource management and be willing to upgrade formal knowledge on a regular basis.
• Knowledge and understanding of missions, organizational goals and objectives of the Tribal intent for historic preservation and cultural management program.
• Familiarity with regulations and standards of various regulatory and credentialing groups relevant to historic preservation and cultural resource management.
• Ability to communicate with various Tribal employees, State and Federal agencies, and other relevant groups in order to effectively gather information and develop recommendations that efficiently coordinate the service.
• Must be able to demonstrate administrative capability in establishing and managing a Tribal historic preservation and cultural resource management department.
• Ability to coordinate work efforts with other respective Tribal departments, as needed.
